For many families, a new pair of sneakers is more than a wardrobe update — it’s a financial stretch. Growing feet often outpace growing budgets, leaving parents choosing between properly fitted shoes and other essential household needs. Project New Step Foundation’s free sneaker program is helping ease that burden, one pair at a time.
Since launching, the program has provided over 1300 pairs of new sneakers to children across our community, with a focus on families facing financial hardship. The impact goes far beyond footwear. Properly fitted shoes support healthy foot development, reduce the risk of injury, and allow kids to participate fully in school, sports, and play without discomfort or embarrassment.
For parents, the savings add up quickly. Children’s shoes often need replacing every few months as feet grow, and quality sneakers can cost $75 to $125 or more per pair. By removing that recurring expense, the program frees up money for groceries, school supplies, and other necessities — giving families breathing room in tight budgets.
Just as important is the boost in confidence. Kids notice when their shoes don’t fit right, or when they’re worn through. A new pair of sneakers can mean walking into the classroom with a little more pride and a little less worry.
“It’s a simple thing, but it makes a real tangible difference,” is something we hear often from parents, teachers & coaches who’ve seen the change firsthand, says, Steven Binder, Founder & CEO of Project New Step Foundation, Inc.
Project New Step Foundation remains committed to expanding this program so more children can step forward — literally and figuratively — without their families carrying the financial weight alone.
