At Project New Step, we believe that how a child feels about themselves on that first day matters more than people often realize. And one simple thing can make a real difference: a brand-new pair of sneakers.
The Confidence Connection
Think back to your own first day of school. What did you wear? For many of us, that outfit — especially those shoes — was chosen carefully, because how we looked reflected how we wanted to feel: ready, confident, and prepared to take on whatever the day brought.
For the children we serve, that same feeling isn’t always guaranteed. Many kids return to school each fall without new sneakers, wearing sneakers that are worn out, too small, or simply not their own choice. That difference may seem small to some, but to a child standing in a hallway full of new faces, it can feel enormous.
A new pair of sneakers isn’t just about fashion — it’s about walking into a classroom feeling like you belong. It’s about not worrying whether classmates will notice worn-out shoes. It’s about one less thing to feel nervous about on a day already filled with plenty of nerves.
Easing the Nervousness, Boosting the Excitement
Nervousness and excitement often go hand in hand during back-to-school season, and that’s exactly as it should be. But when a child also has to worry about how their sneakers look, or whether they’ll fit in, that nervousness can quickly outweigh the excitement.
By providing new sneakers to children in need, we aim to shift that balance — helping nervous energy turn into excitement, and excitement turn into confidence. A great pair of sneakers can be the small spark that helps a child walk into their classroom with their head held a little higher.
Our Commitment This Back-to-School Season
At Project New Step, we understand that confidence isn’t something that happens automatically — it’s built, often through small but meaningful moments. This back-to-school season, we remain committed to making sure more children have one less thing to feel nervous about, and one more reason to feel proud, confident, and ready for whatever the school year brings.
Because every child deserves to walk into their classroom feeling good about who they are — starting from the ground up.
If you’d like to help us reach more children this back-to-school season, please consider making a donation at projectnewstep.org. Every gift helps a child start the school year with confidence.
