Every child deserves to walk into the new year with confidence, comfort, and a pair of shoes that are all their own.
As the holiday season approaches, families across New York City are balancing the joy of the season with the real pressures of daily life. For many, a brand-new pair of sneakers is a luxury. This year, Project New Step Foundation is working to change that for the students of The Hammond School, P.S. 82Q.
A Simple Gift With a Lasting Impact
Project New Step Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides brand-new sneakers to underserved children in communities throughout New York and Florida. Through its partnership with P.S. 82Q, the foundation is also adding a fresh pair of socks to every child’s gift, because a new pair of sneakers is best worn with a new pair of socks.
The word new is the heart of the mission. Too often, children in need receive hand-me-downs or whatever happens to be available. Project New Step believes a child should have the experience of opening a box, lacing up shoes no one has worn before, and feeling that someone thought of them.
A Natural Partnership
The Hammond School, P.S. 82Q, is a collaborative school that fosters high expectations for all through a shared vision of creating future leaders who can think critically and solve problems. Its community is built on strong, trusting, positive relationships among students, teachers, and parents. It is a learning community that empowers children to take risks and apply their learning to real-world experiences.
That philosophy fits the foundation’s work closely. Students who are comfortable, confident, and ready to participate are better prepared to take those risks and reach their full potential. Properly fitting shoes support a child’s ability to play at recess, take part in gym class, walk to and from school safely, and simply feel like they belong among their peers
Why Sneakers? Why Socks?
For a school-age child, shoes are more than clothing:
- Comfort and health: Well-fitting shoes support growing feet through busy school days.
- Participation: Kids who have proper footwear can join in physical education, playground games, and after-school activities without hesitation.
- Confidence: A new pair of sneakers can make a child stand a little taller and walk into class with pride.
- Relief for families: Parents and caregivers facing tight budgets can set aside one worry, especially during a season when expenses climb.
Rooted in Community
The foundation’s work is also about connection. Project New Step relies on the generosity of donors, volunteers, partners, and educators who share a belief that communities thrive when they look out for their youngest members. At P.S. 82Q, the collaboration among staff, families, and the foundation reflects the same spirit of partnership that defines the school itself.
For the foundation, every distribution is a reminder that a small, thoughtful gesture can ripple outward. A child who feels valued at school is a child more ready to learn, to lead, and to give back.
A Holiday Season of Giving
As the holidays arrive, Project New Step Foundation invites neighbors, businesses, and friends to be part of the work. Sponsoring a pair of sneakers and socks, volunteering, or helping spread the word brings a child one step closer to a brighter season.
