Steven Binder, Founder and CEO of the Project New Step Foundation, is making a major impact in the lives of local children by donating more than 1,130 pairs of sneakers to kids at the Boys & Girls Club — giving kids not only proper footwear, but also a confidence boost for school activities and everyday life.
For many students, the surprise of receiving a brand-new pair of sneakers created unforgettable moments.
“Before I opened it, I was like, what sneakers am I going to get? What color?” said Boys & Girls Club of Martin County member Arsenio Bennett. “And when I opened it, it was like this coffee color, and I really liked them.”
The sneaker celebrations, organized through the Project New Step Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club, was funded entirely through donations, is helping ensure students have the very best sneakers for camp, school, recess, sports, and after-school activities.
Binder said one of the most emotional moments came from hearing a child share that they had just received their very first pair of Nike sneakers.
This serves as a reminder that something as simple as a new pair of sneakers can provide both a practical need and a sense of pride for young people.
